The Future(s) of Legacy Fundraising

As our world becomes more and more uncertain, commercial companies, governments and other organisations are increasingly turning to the emerging discipline of futures studies to help them think about what the future holds. However, charities - with their constrained resources - have been slower to incorporate futures into their work, which means, as legacy fundraisers, we're often working within organisations that are concentrating on the here and now. The long-term nature of legacy fundraising means that there is a natural connection between gifts in wills and thinking about the future. We are asking supporters to give in a way that generally won't take effect for many years into the future, and to give a gift that will benefit future generations. In this session, we will explore how futures thinking can help us in our legacy work. We will discuss what foresight and futures techniques can tell us about the future trends we're likely to face, and also, importantly, how we can use these techniques to proactively shape our strategies, and the future of legacy fundraising as a whole.
